What changed this month in AI search
The changes in search engines, assistants, platforms and standards that touch an online store's visibility in AI search and agentic commerce, newest first. One rule: an entry gets in only if it is published on the official page of whoever makes the change, with the date that same page gives. Nothing that third parties report. Each entry says what changed, who it affects in a store and what to do.
Twelve changes between August 31 and October 8, 2026 that affect your store in AI search and in agentic commerce. We read each source on the page of whoever makes the change on October 8, 2026, and each entry's date is the one that page gives.
2026-10-01 · Google: the guidance on AI-generated content points to its quality raters
Google has updated its guidance on AI-generated content to point to its quality rater guidelines, in the sections on scaled content abuse and on content made with little effort and no added value.[1]Google Search Central. Latest Google Search Documentation Updates[2]Google Search Central (updated October 1, 2026). Google Search's guidance on using generative AI content on your website It affects you if you generate product descriptions or listings in bulk with AI. The guidance asks you to review everything generated by hand before publishing it, metadata included: the title, the meta description, the structured data and the alt text of images. And remember that Google Merchant Center asks you to submit separately, flagged as AI-generated, any product title and description that are, and any AI-generated images with their IPTC metadata.[2]Google Search Central (updated October 1, 2026). 2026-09-28 · Shopify: browser agents can now reach the end of checkout
Shopify has added WebMCP tools for agentic checkout: an agent buying from the shopper's browser can read the payment state, update the supported fields and submit it when the shopper confirms, and it hands control back to the person when needed, as with 3D Secure authentication or an extension that blocks the step.[3]Shopify.dev, changelog (September 28, 2026). WebMCP support for checkout Together with the store and cart tools that already worked, they cover the whole journey, from product discovery to order confirmation. It affects every Shopify store, and there is nothing to configure: the tools use the same state as the checkout interface and open no new API.
2026-09-24 · Google: Search Console counts searches made with an image
Search Console now separates multimodal web search, the kind made with an image: Lens, Circle to Search on Android, images uploaded to Google Search and the "Search this image" option in Chrome's context menu.[4]Google Search Central Blog (September 24, 2026). Announcing web multimodal Search performance reporting in Search Console It is a new search type, with its own filter, in the Search performance report and in the generative AI features report, and it rolls out worldwide from that day. It helps if you sell products people photograph to find them: filter by multimodal search and see which listings get those visits.
2026-09-16 · Google: AI performance data and UCP cart handoff, by country
Google has opened Merchant Center's AI performance data to businesses in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the United States; it compares your AI share of voice with that of other brands in AI Mode and in AI Overviews.[5]Google, The Keyword (Ashish Gupta, September 16, 2026). Boost your holiday sales with these agentic commerce updates It also expands the UCP integration hub in Merchant Center with cart handoff to the merchant's website, which is rolling out in the United States, and advises adding conversational attributes, the product video link and loyalty program data to the product feed.[5]Google, The Keyword (Ashish Gupta, September 16, 2026). Boost your holiday sales with these agentic commerce updates If you sell in those countries, check that data in Merchant Center; if not, what you can apply today is the advice on the feed.
2026-09-16 · BigCommerce: the MCP server buys inside the customer's session
BigCommerce's MCP server now lets an AI agent buy inside the session the customer already has open on a Stencil store, with their login, their cart and their identity, without exposing cookies.[6]BigCommerce Docs. Changelog, September 16, 2026: MCP server: logged-in shopping with Storefront Session Sync and B2B Buyer Portal tools Stores with B2B Edition get added tools for shopping lists and quotes, limited by each buyer's permissions. It affects BigCommerce stores that want an agent to buy from them as a registered customer: the session is linked with a short-lived code generated by the generateSessionSyncToken mutation, so it is work for whoever develops the store.
2026-09-16 · Schema.org: version 30.1 adds the digital product passport
Schema.org has published version 30.1, which adds the DigitalProductPassport class and the hasDigitalProductPassport property for Product and Offer, meant for finding a product's digital product passport.[7]Schema.org (September 16, 2026). Schema.org releases: Version 30.1 It also adds properties that come from sales feeds: consumerNotice, isOftenBoughtWith and specification on Product, itemPopularity on Offer, minimumOrderValue on ShippingRateSettings and provider on OfferShippingDetails.[7]Schema.org (September 16, 2026). Schema.org releases: Version 30.1 It matters if you sell products that will carry a digital passport, or if you generate your JSON-LD from the feed. A property existing in the vocabulary does not mean a search engine reads it: before adding one, check whether that search engine's documentation names it.
2026-09-08 · Google: what changes in European Economic Area results
Google has published a page on regional differences in its Search.[1]Google Search Central. Latest Google Search Documentation Updates In the European Economic Area, for product queries, the results page can show an aggregator unit, a direct supplier unit and structured data carousels.[8]Google Search Central. Regional differences in Search experience A direct supplier serving users in the European Economic Area can appear in the supplier unit without sending more data than Google crawls on its site, although a feed can enrich the result.[9]Google Search Central. 2026-09-08 · Shopify: each variant supports multiple barcodes
Shopify now allows up to 20 barcodes per variant, each with its type (UPC, EAN, ISBN, GTIN or ASIN), and validates the typed ones against the rules of their standard.[11]Shopify.dev, changelog (September 8, 2026). Variants now support multiple barcodes The longstanding field, barcode, is deprecated and returns only the first code in the list. It affects stores that send their products to a marketplace, an ERP or a feed: an integration that still reads only barcode will see one code and won't know there are more. Put first the code your channels expect and ask your apps to read the new list, barcodes.[11]Shopify.dev, changelog (September 8, 2026). Variants now support multiple barcodes

Shopify storefronts now support UCP 2026-08-25 That protocol version, published on August 25, adds 3D Secure authentication, deferred, installment or split payments across several payment methods, an extension for loyalty programs and search for physical stores for pickup.[13]Universal Commerce Protocol, official GitHub repository (August 25, 2026). Release v2026-08-25 You don't have to change anything: it is the agent or platform that speaks UCP that negotiates with your store at that version.[12]Shopify.dev, changelog (September 4, 2026). Shopify storefronts now support UCP 2026-08-25
2026-09-01 · Google: the Content API for Shopping starts to fail
Google shut down the Content API for Shopping on August 18, and since September 1 requests to that API get errors progressively: all integrations have to move to the Merchant API.[14]Google for Developers. Latest updates: Merchant API It affects you if your catalog reaches Merchant Center through an app or integration that still uses the old API, because your feed may start failing without you having touched anything. Ask whoever maintains that integration whether it already uses the Merchant API; if it needs more time, Google lets you request an extension of access to the old API.[14]Google for Developers. Latest updates: Merchant API

Search generative AI control Open the report to see which pages show up in those answers before touching the control.
2026-08-31 · BigCommerce: product page titles and descriptions follow the shopper's language
On multi-language Stencil stores, each product's translated meta title and meta description now display in the language the shopper chooses; before, they always came out in the channel's default language.[17]BigCommerce Docs. Changelog, August 31, 2026: Product page titles and meta descriptions follow the shopper's language BigCommerce is rolling it out gradually, so the titles and descriptions of your product pages may change over the coming weeks, and search engines will pick up the new ones when they next crawl the page.[17]BigCommerce Docs. Changelog, August 31, 2026: Product page titles and meta descriptions follow the shopper's language If you sell in more than one language, check that every translation of those two fields is written, because it is now the one shown in that language.
