What is agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce is a way of buying in which an AI agent acts for the buyer: it searches for products, compares them, recommends them and, when the platform and the store allow it, prepares or completes the payment. It relies on open protocols that connect the agent to the store's catalog, cart and checkout, and the store remains the seller.
Key takeaways
- Agentic commerce has three phases worth keeping apart: discovering the product, recommending it and carrying out the purchase. Each one reads different data from the store.
- OpenAI opened purchasing inside ChatGPT in September 2025 and in March 2026 let each merchant use its own checkout so it could focus on discovery.
- Google lets approved US merchants take payment inside AI Mode and Gemini using the UCP protocol; Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom are announced.
- In the published protocols the store remains the seller: it charges, ships and serves the customer with its own systems.
- A store's first job is to get its catalog, complete and up to date, to the places where agents read.
When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini for "waterproof trail running shoes for under a hundred dollars" and gets back three products with prices and a button to buy, that is agentic commerce. It is not a customer service chatbot bolted onto your site or a new marketplace: it is an AI agent that buys, or helps buy, on a person's behalf. A store cares for a practical reason: the buyer can choose your product without ever having opened your product page, so what the agent knows about you is what reaches it through your data.
How it works
Stripe, which processes payments for much of this activity, describes it as using AI agents to facilitate transactions between buyers and sellers, and to let agents buy on behalf of the people they serve.[1]Stripe, documentation. Agentic commerce That one sentence holds three different jobs, and separating them organizes almost every decision a store makes.
Discovering. The agent has to know your product exists, what it costs and whether it is in stock. OpenAI receives that data through the ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol): merchants share their product feed and their promotions, directly or through providers such as Salesforce or Stripe, and Shopify stores reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog with no extra work.[2]OpenAI. Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT On Google, the first step to buy from its AI surfaces is setting up the Google Merchant Center account: shipping, returns and feed.[3]Google for Developers. UCP on Google: integration guide overview
Recommending. The agent chooses what to show and in what order. OpenAI says its product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, that they are not ads, and that when several merchants sell the same item it orders them by availability, price, quality and whether they are the manufacturer or the primary seller.[4]OpenAI, Help Center. Carrying out the purchase. Payment can happen in three places: on your site, after the agent sends the buyer there; inside the assistant, with your system charging behind the scenes; or without the person present, under a permission signed in advance. That third case is the one Google's AP2 (Agent Payments Protocol) addresses: proving that the user gave the agent authority for that specific purchase, that the request reflects what the user wanted, and who is responsible if the transaction goes wrong.[5]Google Cloud, official blog. What works today and what is only announced
This field changes every few months, and almost everything that already works is in the United States. What each company has published, as of October 6, 2026:
| Date | Who | What | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 16, 2025 | Introduces AP2, an open protocol for agent-initiated payments | Protocol published[5]Google Cloud, official blog. Announcing Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) | |
| Sep 29, 2025 | OpenAI and Stripe | Instant Checkout: single-item purchase inside ChatGPT from US Etsy sellers, for US users | Launched in the US[6]OpenAI. Buy it in ChatGPT: Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol |
| Jan 11, 2026 | The UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) and Google Pay checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini, with US merchants | Announced as coming[7]Google, official blog. New tech and tools for retailers to succeed in an agentic shopping era | |
| Mar 24, 2026 | OpenAI | The ACP expands to discovery; merchants can use their own checkout | Rolling out to all ChatGPT plans[2]OpenAI. Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT |
| May 20, 2026 | Universal Cart, deferred payment with Affirm and Klarna, hotels and food delivery | "In the coming months"; Canada and Australia, then the UK[8]Google, official blog. How we're helping retailers thrive with new Universal Commerce Protocol features and AI tools on Google | |

The March 2026 change says the most about where things stand. OpenAI explained that the first version of Instant Checkout did not give merchants the flexibility it was after, so it lets them use their own checkout while it concentrates its effort on product discovery.[2]OpenAI. Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT Its help center still says that, for some eligible products and merchants, ChatGPT may show the option to pay without leaving the chat.[4]OpenAI, Help Center. In a store
A fictional example: a store that sells stovetop espresso makers. A customer asks an assistant for "an induction-compatible moka pot for six cups that isn't aluminum." Each phase of agentic commerce reads something different from that store:
| Phase | What the agent needs | Where the store has it |
|---|---|---|
| Discovering | The product to exist for the agent, with up-to-date price and stock | The feed each platform receives and the store's catalog |
| Recommending | Material, capacity, induction compatibility, reviews | Each product's data, complete and consistent with the published product page |
| Carrying out | A payment the merchant accepts and processes | The payment gateway and, if the platform supports it, the integration with its protocol |
If the feed says "stainless steel" and the product page says "aluminum," the problem shows up in the second row before anyone gets to pay. The first row is where Clione acts: it generates, from the enriched catalog, a daily feed for ChatGPT, which it uploads to the SFTP account OpenAI gives the merchant, and a supplemental feed for Google Merchant Center. Whether the products appear, and where, is up to each platform.
What gets mixed up
Agentic commerce is often read as "paying inside the chat," and read that way it seems like something that does not yet touch a store outside the United States. OpenAI's March 2026 change says the opposite: the purchase can end on your site while the agent still does the work of searching and recommending, fed by merchants' feeds.[2]OpenAI. How to check
- Ask a customer's question in ChatGPT, without your brand, and note whether your product comes up, at what price and which merchants it lists. OpenAI builds that list from third-party data or the merchant's own, and warns that a change in price or shipping can take a while to show.[4]OpenAI, Help Center. Shopping with ChatGPT Search
- Review your feed's status in Google Merchant Center: shipping, returns and products without errors are the starting point for any purchase from Google's AI surfaces.[3]Google for Developers. UCP on Google: integration guide overview
- If you sell on Shopify, check that each product's data in your admin is complete: it is what Shopify Catalog carries to ChatGPT without you doing anything else.[2]OpenAI. Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT
- Compare what the agent says with your published product page: price, stock and the attribute that decided the recommendation. If they do not match, the fault is in the data reaching it, not in the agent.
Related concept: agentic AI
Agentic AI is the technology: systems that decide their own steps and use tools to complete a task. Agentic commerce is one of its applications, buying, with problems of its own: who the seller is, who charges, who answers for a mistake. That is why the commerce protocols insist on the same point: in the ACP, OpenAI acts as the buyer's agent and the store accepts or rejects the order, charges through its own provider and handles shipping and customer service as it always has;[6]OpenAI. Buy it in ChatGPT: Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol in the UCP, Google says merchants remain the seller.[7]Google, official blog. New tech and tools for retailers to succeed in an agentic shopping era And within agentic commerce, agentic checkout is only the last phase.
To go further, the agentic commerce reading path lays out the protocols that connect an agent to a store, starting with the MCP (Model Context Protocol).
