What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of preparing a website's content so that an answer engine, such as a search engine's featured snippet, a voice assistant or an AI chat, picks it as the direct answer to a question instead of just listing it among the results.
Key takeaways
- AEO aims to make your page the answer to a question, not one more link in the results list.
- The idea predates generative AI: Google has shown featured snippets, an answer above the results, since January 2014.
- Google does not let you mark a page to appear as an answer: its systems pick the snippet, and there is no special markup for its AI features.
- For Google, AEO and GEO are two names for the same work, and that work is still SEO.
- What you do control is whether your page can be used: indexed, with snippets allowed and open to each assistant's crawlers.
AEO is the work of making the answer an answer engine gives come from your page, and the acronym stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It has nothing to do with the customs program called Authorized Economic Operator, which shares the acronym, or with any clothing brand. We are talking about search. An answer engine is any system that, given a question, returns an answer instead of a list of links. A store cares for a practical reason: when the shopper's doubt ("is this grinder good for espresso?") gets settled on the results page itself or in a chat, the question is no longer where your product page ranks, but whether the answer is yours.
How an answer engine works
The idea predates generative AI. Google introduced featured snippets in January 2014.[1]Google, The Keyword (Danny Sullivan, January 30, 2018). A reintroduction to Google's featured snippets A featured snippet is the box that appears with the answer at the very top: it shows an excerpt from a web page that answers the question, and Google displays it when it thinks people are looking for an answer that fits in a short piece of a page.[2]Google Search Help. How Google's featured snippets work It is called that because it reverses the order of a normal result: the description comes first, and the link after.[3]Google Search Central. Featured snippets and your website
Voice assistants took the idea to the extreme. In 2018 Google explained that featured snippets are especially useful on mobile and in voice searches, where a list of ten links works worse, and that when a snippet was read aloud it credited the source page and gave the link in the Google Home app.[1]Google, The Keyword (Danny Sullivan, January 30, 2018). A reintroduction to Google's featured snippets That is the core of AEO: a single answer, with a single source, that the user hears or reads without going through the list.
Generative AI changes the mechanics, not the goal. AI Overviews and Google AI Mode do not copy a passage: they retrieve pages from Google's index with its ranking systems (what Google calls retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or grounding), write an answer from what they read and show links to the pages that back it up.[4]Google Search Central. Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search Microsoft describes it the same way from Bing: AI systems extract short, easy-to-cite snippets, and may use a single line or combine several snippets from different sites into one answer.[5]Microsoft Advertising (Krishna Madhavan, October 8, 2025). Optimizing Your Content for Inclusion in AI Search Answers The answer no longer comes from one page, but from several.
What Google says about AEO
On May 15, 2026, Google published a guide to optimizing for its generative AI features, with a section that takes apart the most widespread misconceptions.[6]Google Search Central. Latest documentation updates The guide defines AEO as optimization for answer engines and puts it next to GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): both describe the work of improving visibility in AI search experiences, and for Google that work is still SEO.[4]Google Search Central. What that means in practice:
- You cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. Google's systems decide whether a page would make a good snippet for a search and, if it would, they elevate it.[3]Google Search Central. Featured snippets and your website For its AI features there is no special markup either: no AI-specific file and no dedicated Schema.org markup is needed.[4]Google Search Central. Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search
- You can stop them from using you. The
nosnippetrule blocks all snippets from a page, featured ones included, and a shortmax-snippetmakes appearing as a featured snippet less likely, without guaranteeing it.[3]Google Search Central. Featured snippets and your website The same controls limit what AI Overviews and AI Mode show.[7]Google Search Central. AI features and your website - There is a prerequisite. To appear in generative AI features, the page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and the site has to be included in those features from Search Console.[4]Google Search Central. Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search
- Many tricks do not work. Among the things you can ignore, the guide lists chopping content into small pieces, rewriting it just for AI and creating files such as
llms.txt.[4]Google Search Central. Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search
Microsoft gives more concrete advice on format, and it fits the featured snippet's legacy: one- or two-sentence answers that respond directly to the question, lists, tables and question-and-answer blocks that can be extracted cleanly, and sentences that make sense when lifted out of context. It adds that assistants may copy a question-and-answer pair word for word.[5]Microsoft Advertising (Krishna Madhavan, October 8, 2025). Optimizing Your Content for Inclusion in AI Search Answers
In a store
A fictitious example: a coffee store sells a grinder, and the question it gets most is whether it works for espresso. On the product page, that answer is buried in the fourth paragraph of the description. Doing AEO with it takes nothing exotic: put the question in plain view and answer it in the first sentence, with the fact that backs it up.
| Answer format | What it takes from your page | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Google featured snippet | A piece of text that answers the question[2]Google Search Help. How Google's featured snippets work | Whether the page can be shown with a snippet (nosnippet, max-snippet)[3]Google Search Central. Featured snippets and your website |
| Answer read aloud | The same snippet, crediting the source[1]Google, The Keyword (Danny Sullivan, January 30, 2018). A reintroduction to Google's featured snippets | The same as the featured snippet |
| AI Overviews and AI Mode | Information from several indexed pages, with supporting links[7]Google Search Central. AI features and your website | Indexing, snippet and inclusion in Search Console[4]Google Search Central. Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search |
| ChatGPT search | The sites its search engine shows[8]OpenAI. Overview of OpenAI Crawlers | Letting OAI-SearchBot in through robots.txt[8]OpenAI. Overview of OpenAI Crawlers |
On the grinder's page, that translates into a visible block such as "Is it good for espresso? Yes: its finest setting reaches espresso grind," followed by the technical detail that proves it, as text and not inside an image.
What people often get wrong
That AEO means adding markup to "show up as the answer." Google says the opposite in both of its documents: you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet, because its systems decide,[3]Google Search Central. Featured snippets and your website and for its generative AI features there is no special markup to add.[4]Google Search Central. Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search What you control is whether the page can be used; whether it gets picked depends on answering better than the others.
How to check it
- Search Google for the three questions you get asked most and note what appears on top: a featured snippet, an AI Overview or nothing, and which page each one comes from.
- Review the snippet controls on your product pages. If one carries
nosnippet, it cannot appear as a featured snippet or a regular one; a lowmax-snippetmakes it less likely.[3]Google Search Central. Featured snippets and your website - Confirm in Search Console that the product pages are indexed and that the site is included in the generative AI features of Search, a condition for appearing in them.[4]Google Search Central. Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search
- Open your
robots.txtand see whether OAI-SearchBot can get through: a site that blocks it does not show up in ChatGPT's search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link.[8]OpenAI. Overview of OpenAI Crawlers - Read the product page as an assistant would. Take the first sentence of each question block and check that it makes sense on its own, without the rest of the page.[5]Microsoft Advertising (Krishna Madhavan, October 8, 2025). Related concept: GEO
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the closest term, and Google gives the two a single definition.[4]Google Search Central. Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search The useful difference is one of origin and emphasis. AEO thinks in terms of one question and one answer, with the logic of featured snippets and voice assistants, where winning meant being the only source.[1]Google, The Keyword (Danny Sullivan, January 30, 2018). A reintroduction to Google's featured snippets GEO comes from an academic paper published in November 2023, which presents it as a way to improve content visibility in the answers of generative engines, which synthesize information from several sources.[9]arXiv (Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan and Deshpande; KDD 2024). GEO: Generative Engine Optimization There, what you win is a place among the cited ones. What you do for one almost always works for the other. The GEO entry covers the paper, its figures and what Google says about it.
To see the three terms side by side, there is the comparison SEO vs GEO and AEO: what changes for an online store, and for the rest of the vocabulary, the AI search reading path.
