What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search is a search that ends without the person clicking any result: they abandon it, reformulate it or settle for what they see on the results page itself, such as an AI-generated summary, a featured snippet or a business listing. A zero-click search costs visits, not necessarily visibility.

Key takeaways

  • A zero-click search ends with no click on any result: the person leaves, searches for something else or settles for the answer they see.
  • It is not an AI effect: in 2019, 49% of Google searches already ended without a click, according to SparkToro.
  • With an AI summary on the page, people click a result about half as often, according to a Pew Research study of 900 US adults.
  • Google says the clicks that come from pages with AI Overviews are higher quality: the people who arrive spend more time on the site.
  • For a store, the number that changes is the ratio of impressions to clicks; it is measured in Search Console and completed with sales.

In SEO, zero-click has nothing to do with the security attacks that share the name or with one-click purchasing: it is a search that ends without anyone clicking any result. The person reads the answer on Google's own page, changes the search or leaves. It matters to a store because it explains a chart that baffles people: the impressions for your product pages rise or hold steady and the clicks do not follow. Before reading it as a problem with your site, it helps to know how much of this happens in general and how much has to do with AI.

How it works

The most-quoted figures come from browsing panels: people who agree to have what they do after searching recorded. SparkToro's June 2026 study, using the Similarweb panel, counts as zero-click any search that ends in another search or in the end of the session. Between January and April 2026, 68.01% of Google searches in the United States ended without a click, up from 60.45% in 2024. In 2019, SparkToro's first measurement had given 49%.[1]SparkToro (Rand Fishkin, June 8, 2026), with data from the Similarweb panel. In 2026, Less than One Third of Google Searches Still Send a Click

Eight days later it published the same data for other countries. The United Kingdom had the highest share, 69.5%; France, 65.3%; Italy, 63.4%; and Germany, the lowest, 62.1%.[2]SparkToro (June 16, 2026), with data from the Similarweb panel. Zero-Click Searches: Highest in the UK, Lowest in Germany, and France has the Most Efficient Searchers Read those figures as an order of magnitude, not as exact comparisons between countries.

AI search pushes in the same direction. Pew Research analyzed the browsing of 900 US adults during March 2025. When the Google page showed an AI-generated summary, people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was none; they clicked a link inside the summary itself on just 1%. And they ended the session on 26% of pages with a summary, versus 16% without one.[3]Pew Research Center (Athena Chapekis and Anna Lieb, July 22, 2025). Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results

Those summaries do not show up on every search. In the same study, they appeared on 18% of searches, on 8% of those with one or two words, on 53% of those with ten words or more and on 60% of those that began with a question word such as "what" or "why."[3]Pew Research Center (Athena Chapekis and Anna Lieb, July 22, 2025). Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results The more a search looks like a question, the more likely Google is to answer it itself.

Google tells another part of the story. It says the clicks that arrive from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, because the people who arrive tend to spend more time on the site, and it points out that presence in its AI features, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, is counted within search traffic in Search Console, in the performance report, under the "Web" search type.[4]Google Search Central. AI features and your website AI Mode still weighed little in SparkToro's panel: only 0.34% of searches from January to April 2026 moved into it.[1]SparkToro (Rand Fishkin, June 8, 2026), with data from the Similarweb panel. In a store

A fictional example: a coffee store that sells grinders. Not all of its zero-click searches are a loss, and separating them by type helps decide what to watch.

The buyer's search What they see without clicking What it means for the store
"coffee shop hours in Brooklyn" The hours on the business listing Nothing to lose: they got the answer and may well come to the shop
"is the X grinder good for espresso?" An AI summary that answers with a fact from your product page and cites it Visibility without a visit: the buyer knows about you, even if they do not click through
"best grinder for espresso at home" A summary that recommends three models from other stores The real loss: the decision is made without you
"X grinder" Merchant listings with price Depends on whether your product is in those listings

The third row is the one worth working on. The others measure a visit that did not happen, but not a lost sale, and that is why the click, on its own, is a poor yardstick for a search that gets resolved on the results page.

Warning:

What gets mixed up

That zero-click is an invention of AI, or proof that SEO no longer works. SparkToro's first measurement, from 2019, already gave 49% of searches without a click, years before AI Overviews.[1]SparkToro (Rand Fishkin, June 8, 2026), with data from the Similarweb panel. In 2026, Less than One Third of Google Searches Still Send a Click And a search ending without a click does not mean your page was not seen: Google counts those appearances as impressions in Search Console.[4]Google Search Central. How to check

  1. Open the Search Console performance report and compare impressions and clicks for your product pages across two equal periods. Appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode are already included, under "Web" search.[4]Google Search Central. AI features and your website
  2. Look at the generative AI performance report. Since August 31, 2026 it has been available to all sites, it counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and it only appears if your site accumulates enough impressions in those features.[5]Search Console Help. Generative AI performance report (Search)
  3. Search your ten queries with the most impressions and note, with the date, whether an AI summary appears and whether your store is among its sources. Start with the ones shaped like questions: they show the most summaries.[3]Pew Research Center (Athena Chapekis and Anna Lieb, July 22, 2025). Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results
  4. Measure what happens after the click, not just the click. Google suggests tracking conversions and time on site with tools such as Google Analytics.[4]Google Search Central. AI features and your website
  5. Separate the sales that arrive from assistants. With Google Analytics connected, Clione, for example, tells you which orders came from AI assistants, with a margin that shows when a difference may be noise, and which sources cannot be measured.

AI visibility is the positive side of the same coin. Zero-click measures what does not arrive, the visit; AI visibility measures what does happen, that your store appears or is cited in the answer. They are compatible: a search can be zero-click and still show your brand, which is exactly what the impressions in Search Console's generative AI report count.[5]Search Console Help. Generative AI performance report (Search) A drop in clicks with stable visibility calls for a different strategy than a drop in both.

To go further, the entry on AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) explains how to work to be the answer, and the AI search reading path puts the rest of the terms in order.
