Agentic commerce

What are Shopify's agentic storefronts?

Agentic storefronts are the Shopify feature that takes a store's products to AI channels, such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Google's AI Mode, through Shopify Catalog and its sales channels, without a separate integration for each one. They are on by default for eligible stores, and the merchant chooses channel by channel where to sell.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify introduced agentic storefronts on December 10, 2025 for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot; its help center now names ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Meta.
  • They are on by default for eligible stores and are managed channel by channel from the Agentic section of the sales channels in the admin.
  • In ChatGPT the purchase ends at the store's checkout; in AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Meta it can be completed inside the channel if the store turns on direct payment.
  • To sell in ChatGPT, the store has to sell to customers in the United States, even if it is based in another country.
  • What reaches the agents is the product data: title, description, options, images, price and availability.

"Agentic storefronts" sounds like a new store you have to build, and it is not. It is not a theme, or a separate site, or a headless store: it is the name Shopify gives to its part of agentic commerce, the set of settings that decides which AI channels your catalog reaches and where the purchase ends. For a Shopify store it matters for a practical reason: if it is eligible, it is already in, because the feature comes turned on. The decision is not to install it, but to review what is being sent and to whom.

How it works

Shopify introduced it on December 10, 2025, with its Winter edition. The promise was to set up once and have Shopify Catalog distribute products to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, with other channels to come, turning each platform on or off separately. According to Shopify, Catalog infers categories, extracts attributes, groups variants and merges identical items, keeps prices and stock up to date, and attributes each sale to its channel in the admin. The store remains the seller and keeps the relationship with the customer.[1]Shopify, newsroom (December 10, 2025). Today Shopify's help center describes the feature like this:[2]Shopify Help Center. Agentic storefronts

  • The channels. ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces such as Muse.
  • On by default for eligible stores, with additional terms of service that have to be accepted.
  • Where the products come from. From Shopify Catalog, from the Google & YouTube sales channel or from Google Merchant Center.
  • Where it is managed. In the Agentic section of the sales channels in the admin, channel by channel.
  • Orders appear in the admin with the channel or referrer they came from.

What travels is the product data: title, description, options, images, price, availability and other key attributes, structured so an AI agent can read them. If you keep data in metafields or metaobjects, the Catalog Mapping tool lets you say where each piece of data comes from. Products that are only sold to businesses are left out automatically.[3]Shopify Help Center. Making products available to AI channels

In the Spring edition, on June 17, 2026, Shopify added a dashboard to the admin: which channels are active, whether each one has discovery and direct payment turned on, and the orders and sales from ChatGPT, Copilot, AI Mode, the Gemini app and Shop in a single view. Shopify states that AI search queries that use Catalog convert at twice the rate of those that use data scraped from the web; that is its own figure, with no method published in that announcement.[4]Shopify, newsroom (June 17, 2026). In a store

A fictitious example: a Shopify store based in Montreal, Canada, that sells coffee makers and ships to the United States. According to Shopify's help center, as of October 6, 2026, this is how each channel would work for it:

Channel How its products get there Where the purchase ends
ChatGPT Shopify Catalog[5]Shopify Help Center. Editing robots.txt.liquid At the store's checkout, inside a browser in the ChatGPT app or in a new tab[2]Shopify Help Center. Agentic storefronts

For ChatGPT, the Montreal store meets the main requirement: Shopify requires selling to customers in the United States, not being based there. It also asks that the products be eligible for Catalog, that the terms of service, privacy policy and return policy be published, and that the product's legal warnings be within the first 6,000 characters of the description.[6]Shopify Help Center. Warning:

What people often get wrong

That blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt takes your products out of ChatGPT or Copilot. On Shopify it does not: blocking them only affects what is discovered on the open web, and it does not stop the data Shopify Catalog sends to the agentic storefronts you have turned on. That is what the settings in the Agentic section are for.[5]Shopify Help Center. Editing robots.txt.liquid

How to check it

  1. Open the Agentic section of the sales channels in your admin and see which channels you have active and which have direct payment.[2]Shopify Help Center. Agentic storefronts
  2. Review the ChatGPT requirements: selling to the United States, published policies and legal warnings at the start of the description.[6]Shopify Help Center. Selling in ChatGPT (agentic storefronts)
  3. See what data travels. Title, description, options and images come from your product page; if you keep attributes in metafields, review Catalog Mapping.[3]Shopify Help Center. Making products available to AI channels
  4. If a product should not appear in AI channels, the route is to mark it as unlisted, knowing that it also disappears from the XML sitemap, from search engines and from your store's search.[3]Shopify Help Center. Making products available to AI channels
  5. Check order attribution: each one should show the AI channel it came from.[2]Shopify Help Center. Agentic storefronts

Shopify Catalog is the data layer: the structured set of products from Shopify merchants that agents read. Shopify says merchants with eligible products are in Catalog by default and that Catalog distributes the data to ChatGPT, Copilot, Shop and others without apps or manual feeds.[4]Shopify, newsroom (June 17, 2026). Selling everything, everywhere, all at once: The Spring '26 Edition OpenAI confirms it from its side: products from Shopify stores reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog with no additional work from the merchant.[7]OpenAI. Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT Agentic storefronts are the part the merchant sees: the per-channel switches, direct payment and the reports. For payment, Shopify relies on UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol), which according to the same announcement its merchants have turned on by default.[4]Shopify, newsroom (June 17, 2026). To go further, agentic checkout explains what happens when payment is made inside the channel, and the agentic commerce reading path orders the rest of the pieces.
