Twelve changes between August 31 and October 8, 2026 that affect your store in [AI search](/glossary/ai-search/) and in [agentic commerce](/glossary/agentic-commerce/). We read each source on the page of whoever makes the change on October 8, 2026, and each entry's date is the one that page gives.

## 2026-10-01 · Google: the guidance on AI-generated content points to its quality raters

Google has updated its guidance on AI-generated content to point to its quality rater guidelines, in the sections on [scaled content abuse](/glossary/scaled-content-abuse/) and on content made with little effort and no added value.[^google-search-updates][^google-genai-content] It affects you if you generate [product descriptions](/glossary/product-description/) or listings in bulk with AI. The guidance asks you to **review everything generated by hand before publishing it**, metadata included: the title, the [_meta description_](/glossary/meta-description/), the [structured data](/glossary/structured-data/) and the [alt text](/glossary/alt-text/) of images. And remember that [Google Merchant Center](/glossary/google-merchant-center/) asks you to submit separately, flagged as AI-generated, any product title and description that are, and any AI-generated images with their IPTC metadata.[^google-genai-content]

## 2026-09-28 · Shopify: browser agents can now reach the end of checkout

Shopify has added WebMCP tools for [agentic checkout](/glossary/agentic-checkout/): an agent buying from the shopper's browser can read the payment state, update the supported fields and submit it when the shopper confirms, and it hands control back to the person when needed, as with 3D Secure authentication or an extension that blocks the step.[^shopify-webmcp-checkout] Together with the store and cart tools that already worked, they cover the whole journey, from product discovery to order confirmation. It affects every Shopify store, and **there is nothing to configure**: the tools use the same state as the checkout interface and open no new API.

## 2026-09-24 · Google: Search Console counts searches made with an image

[Search Console](/glossary/google-search-console/) now separates multimodal web search, the kind made with an image: Lens, Circle to Search on Android, images uploaded to Google Search and the "Search this image" option in Chrome's context menu.[^google-multimodal-sc] It is a new search type, with its own filter, in the Search performance report and in the generative AI features report, and it rolls out worldwide from that day. It helps if you sell products people photograph to find them: **filter by multimodal search** and see which listings get those visits.

## 2026-09-16 · Google: AI performance data and UCP cart handoff, by country

Google has opened Merchant Center's AI performance data to businesses in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the United States; it compares your [AI share of voice](/glossary/ai-share-of-voice/) with that of other brands in [AI Mode](/glossary/google-ai-mode/) and in [AI Overviews](/glossary/ai-overviews/).[^google-holiday-commerce] It also expands the [UCP](/glossary/ucp/) integration hub in Merchant Center with cart handoff to the merchant's website, which is rolling out in the United States, and advises adding conversational attributes, the product video link and loyalty program data to the [product feed](/glossary/product-feed/).[^google-holiday-commerce] If you sell in those countries, check that data in Merchant Center; if not, what you can apply today is the advice on the feed.

## 2026-09-16 · BigCommerce: the MCP server buys inside the customer's session

BigCommerce's [MCP server](/glossary/mcp-server/) now lets an [AI agent](/glossary/ai-agent/) buy inside the session the customer already has open on a [Stencil](/glossary/bigcommerce-stencil/) store, with their login, their cart and their identity, without exposing cookies.[^bc-changelog-0916] Stores with B2B Edition get added tools for shopping lists and quotes, limited by each buyer's permissions. It affects BigCommerce stores that want an agent to buy from them as a registered customer: the session is linked with a short-lived code generated by the `generateSessionSyncToken` mutation, so it is work for whoever develops the store.

## 2026-09-16 · Schema.org: version 30.1 adds the digital product passport

[Schema.org](/glossary/schema-org/) has published version 30.1, which adds the `DigitalProductPassport` class and the `hasDigitalProductPassport` property for [Product](/glossary/product-schema/) and [Offer](/glossary/offer-schema/), meant for finding a product's digital product passport.[^schemaorg-releases] It also adds properties that come from sales feeds: `consumerNotice`, `isOftenBoughtWith` and `specification` on Product, `itemPopularity` on Offer, `minimumOrderValue` on `ShippingRateSettings` and `provider` on [OfferShippingDetails](/glossary/offershippingdetails/).[^schemaorg-releases] It matters if you sell products that will carry a digital passport, or if you generate your [JSON-LD](/glossary/json-ld/) from the feed. **A property existing in the vocabulary does not mean a search engine reads it**: before adding one, check whether that search engine's documentation names it.

## 2026-09-08 · Google: what changes in European Economic Area results

Google has published a page on regional differences in its Search.[^google-search-updates] In the European Economic Area, for product queries, the results page can show an aggregator unit, a direct supplier unit and structured data carousels.[^google-regional] A direct supplier serving users in the European Economic Area can appear in the supplier unit without sending more data than Google crawls on its site, although a feed can enrich the result.[^google-supplier-unit] The carousel, in beta, is built with [ItemList](/glossary/itemlist/) and Product on a page that summarizes several products, such as a [category page](/glossary/category-page/), and for product queries Google points to the Comparison Shopping Services (CSS) program.[^google-carousels-beta]

## 2026-09-08 · Shopify: each variant supports multiple barcodes

Shopify now allows up to 20 barcodes per variant, each with its type (UPC, [EAN](/glossary/ean-code/), ISBN, [GTIN](/glossary/gtin/) or ASIN), and validates the typed ones against the rules of their standard.[^shopify-barcodes] The longstanding field, `barcode`, is deprecated and returns only the first code in the list. It affects stores that send their products to a marketplace, an ERP or a feed: **an integration that still reads only `barcode` will see one code and won't know there are more**. Put first the code your channels expect and ask your apps to read the new list, `barcodes`.[^shopify-barcodes]

## 2026-09-04 · Shopify: stores declare the August 25 UCP version

Shopify stores now announce in their discovery profile, at `/.well-known/ucp`, that they support UCP version 2026-08-25; the features Shopify offers do not change.[^shopify-ucp] That protocol version, published on August 25, adds 3D Secure authentication, deferred, installment or split payments across several payment methods, an extension for loyalty programs and search for physical stores for pickup.[^ucp-release] **You don't have to change anything**: it is the agent or platform that speaks UCP that negotiates with your store at that version.[^shopify-ucp]

## 2026-09-01 · Google: the Content API for Shopping starts to fail

Google shut down the Content API for Shopping on August 18, and since September 1 requests to that API get errors progressively: all integrations have to move to the Merchant API.[^merchant-api-updates] It affects you if your catalog reaches Merchant Center through an app or integration that still uses the old API, because **your feed may start failing without you having touched anything**. Ask whoever maintains that integration whether it already uses the Merchant API; if it needs more time, Google lets you request an extension of access to the old API.[^merchant-api-updates]

## 2026-08-31 · Google: the generative AI report and control reach every site

Since August 31, Search Console's [generative AI performance report](/glossary/generative-ai-performance-report/) is available to all sites worldwide: it gives impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device.[^gsc-genai-report] The same day, [Search Console's generative AI control](/glossary/search-console-generative-ai-control/) reached everyone, in Settings, and decides whether your content can appear and be linked in those features and in Discover's generative AI features. By default your site is included, excluding it affects neither the rest of Search nor your participation in Merchant Center, and the change takes a few days to apply.[^gsc-genai-control] Open the report to see which pages show up in those answers **before touching the control**.

## 2026-08-31 · BigCommerce: product page titles and descriptions follow the shopper's language

On multi-language Stencil stores, each product's translated [_meta title_](/glossary/meta-title/) and _meta description_ now display in the language the shopper chooses; before, they always came out in the channel's default language.[^bc-changelog-0831] BigCommerce is rolling it out gradually, so the titles and descriptions of your product pages may change over the coming weeks, and search engines will pick up the new ones when they next crawl the page.[^bc-changelog-0831] If you sell in more than one language, **check that every translation of those two fields is written**, because it is now the one shown in that language.
