The acronym SGE has several meanings; here it is Search Generative Experience, the first name Google gave to its AI-generated answers in Search. If you find it in an audit, a course or an agency proposal, the first thing to do is look at the date: **SGE is the retired name of what is today [AI Overviews](/glossary/ai-overviews/)**, and advice written for the 2023 experiment describes a product that no longer works the same way. A store should care for that reason: much of what was written about "SEO for SGE" is still circulating, and you need to know what still stands.

## How it worked

Google introduced SGE on May 10, 2023 as the first experiment in Search Labs, its space for trying early-stage features. It was available in the United States and in English, in desktop Chrome and in the Google app, with a waitlist. For certain searches, it showed **an [AI-generated summary](/glossary/generative-summary/) of key information, with links to dig deeper**, and below it some suggested next steps that opened a conversational mode in which context carried from one question to the next. Google said it limited the types of queries it appeared on and that ads would remain in dedicated spaces, distinguishable from organic results.[^google-sge-2023]

For shopping, SGE gave a summary of factors to consider and of products that fit, with descriptions that included reviews, ratings, prices and images. It drew on Google's Shopping Graph, which at the time had **more than 35 billion product listings**, of which more than 1.8 billion were updated every hour.[^google-sge-2023]

On November 8, 2023, Google took Search Labs and SGE, in English, to more than 120 new countries and territories, among them Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, and added four languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Korean and Indonesian. It also said SGE showed more links, from a wider range of sources, on the results page.[^google-sge-expansion] Of the countries it named, none was European.

## From SGE to AI Overviews

On May 14, 2024, Google announced that AI Overviews was beginning to roll out to everyone in the United States, with more countries to follow, and that it expected to reach **more than a billion people by the end of the year**. In the same announcement it said people had already used AI Overviews billions of times through its Search Labs experiment: the SGE summary was leaving the lab under another name.[^google-io-2024] It reached a first group of European countries on March 26, 2025, for people over 18 signed in to their Google account.[^google-es-europe]

What Google documents today resembles SGE in idea and not in the details. AI Overviews helps capture the gist of a topic or a complicated question, and to appear as a supporting link a page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, with no additional technical requirements.[^google-ai-features] The conversation with follow-up questions now lives in a separate experience, [Google's AI Mode](/glossary/google-ai-mode/), designed for searches that call for exploring, reasoning or comparing.[^google-ai-features] And the Shopping Graph went from the more than 35 billion products of 2023 to **more than 50 billion in May 2025**, with more than 2 billion updated every hour.[^google-shopping-io]

## In a store

A **made-up example**: a 2023 SEO audit for a housewares store with a section called "Getting the store ready for SGE". This is how each point translates into what Google documents today:

| What the audit said | What it is today | Where it is checked |
| ------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| "Optimize product pages for SGE" | To appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, the page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet; there are no additional requirements[^google-ai-features] | URL Inspection in [Search Console](/glossary/google-search-console/) |
| "Add special markup for SGE" | There is no special [schema.org](/glossary/schema-org/) markup for generative search; [structured data](/glossary/structured-data/) is still useful for [rich results](/glossary/rich-results/)[^google-ai-guide] | The [Rich Results Test](/glossary/rich-results-test/) |
| "Measure the traffic coming from SGE" | The [generative AI performance report](/glossary/generative-ai-performance-report/) gives impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, for all sites since August 31, 2026[^gsc-genai-report] | Search Console |
| "Get into SGE's product carousel" | [Google Merchant Center](/glossary/google-merchant-center/) feeds help products be visible in AI answers and in the rest of Search[^google-ai-guide] | Merchant Center |

None of the four tasks goes away; the name of the destination and the tool it is measured with change. What is superfluous is **any work aimed at "SGE" as if it were a system distinct from Search**: Google now says that optimizing for its generative search is still SEO.[^google-ai-guide]

Taking SGE screenshots, figures or cases as proof of what happens today for a store outside the United States. SGE was an English-language experiment that began in the United States and expanded to countries none of which, among those Google named, was European,[^google-sge-expansion] and the feature reached European countries almost two years later, already as AI Overviews.[^google-es-europe] In addition, **Search Console does not include data from Search Labs experiments**,[^gsc-genai-report] so what was seen in the lab could never be measured the way it is measured today.

## How to check it

1. **Look at the date of any advice that says SGE.** If it is earlier than May 2024, it describes the Search Labs experiment, not AI Overviews.[^google-io-2024]
2. **Search your customer's question in Google** with an adult account that is signed in, and note whether an AI Overview appears and which links it carries.[^google-es-europe]
3. **Inspect in Search Console a [product page](/glossary/product-page/) that should appear**: indexed and with nothing stopping it from showing a snippet.[^google-ai-features]
4. **Open the generative AI performance report** to see impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It only appears if your site accumulates enough impressions in those features.[^gsc-genai-report]

## Related concept: AI Overviews

AI Overviews is the current name of the feature SGE tested: the same type of summary with links, out of the lab, available to everyone and in many more countries.[^google-io-2024][^google-es-europe] The practical difference is that AI Overviews has documentation for site owners and a report of its own in Search Console.[^google-ai-features][^gsc-genai-report] To know how it works today, read the AI Overviews entry, not the articles about SGE.

To go further, the [AI search](/glossary/ai-search/) entry gives the general frame, and the [AI search reading path](/learn/ai-search/) orders the rest of the terms.
